Container Vegetable & Herb Gardening Series

Learn to Make Nicoise Salad

Join us Thursday, September 15 from 12pm to 2pm* for meal prep followed by a shared lunch!

Learn how to make Nicoise salad, a healthy, versatile meal originating in Nice, France, that combines an assortment of fresh vegetables, hardboiled eggs and other protein options like beans or tuna and topped with a light, lemony vinaigrette.

After participants create this delightful salad, we will share this meal together in the Horodynksy Community Kitchen. Meal kits will also be available at the Troy Scott Community Fridges.

Join us Thursday, September 8 from 1 to 2pm to learn how to make herb seasoning using a delightful combination of herbs collected and dried at a past session at the Rizzardo Health & Wellness Centre.

Participants will learn hands-on how to make simple dried herb seasoning suitable to add to meats and meat substitutes before cooking. The seasoning will be made available at the Troy Scott Community Fridges’ pantries.

Container Vegetable & Herb Gardening Series

Learn to Save Tomato Seeds

Join us Thursday, September 1 from 1 to 2pm to learn how to save tomato seeds using the “fermentation process,” a method that promotes healthy, viable seeds to grow in future seasons.

Participants will learn hands-on how to harvest tomato seeds and properly clean them after fermentation has happened. We’ll also discuss best seed storage options and learn about other seeds we can easily save from our gardens. Bring your questions!

These tomato seeds will be available at the Innisfil Seed Library at the Cookstown & Lakeshore branches of the Innisfil ideaLAB & Library next spring.

Container Vegetable & Herb Gardening Series

Make Lemongrass Tea Rings

Join us Thursday, August 25 from 1pm to 2pm to learn how to make tea rings from lemongrass growing in the container gardens onsite at the Rizzardo Health & Wellness Centre.

Participants will learn how to harvest lemongrass and create these simple rings that can be used to make a delicious tea by simply placing one at the bottom of a cup and pouring hot water over it, or it can be steeped in a broth to add a wonderful lemony flavour to soup or rice. Once dried, the rings will be made available in the Troy Scott Community Fridges’ pantries.

Learn to Make Herby Butter

Join us Thursday, August 18 from 1 to 2pm to learn how to make simple compound butter using herbs from our container gardens.

Participants will learn how to harvest herbs, like rosemary and chives, from our onsite containers to add to a few simple recipes at the Horodynsky Community Kitchen. The tasty variety of compound butter can be used as a spread or in cooking and will be available at the Troy Scott Community Fridges.

Trim & Clean Homegrown Garlic

Join us Thursday, August 11 from 1pm to 2pm to learn hands-on how to trim and clean homegrown garlic for long-term storage.

Participants will learn how to prepare and store garlic that has been locally harvested, dried and cured. Properly cured and stored garlic can last up to 8 months! This session is a precursor to an upcoming garlic-growing workshop in the fall to be announced.

Join us Thursday, August 4 from 1 to 2pm to learn how to extend your food garden harvests through easy, at-home methods like drying, freezing and dehydrating.

We'll begin at the outdoor container gardens at the Rizzardo Health & Wellness Centre to learn how to properly harvest from some plants, and then we'll head into the Horodynsky Community Kitchen for hands-on learning of these simple preservation methods. When ready, these preserves will be available in the pantries of the Troy Scott Community Fridges.

Things are heating up!

Participants will learn how to make vegetarian Thai basil sauce using basil from our container gardens.

We'll start by harvesting this flavourful herb together and will then head into the Horodynsky Community Kitchen to cook up this sauce for the Troy Scott Community Fridges.

Thai basil sauce is great served with rice over meat like chicken or stir-fry vegetables or tofu.
